Giving your children choices promotes independence Giving your children choices promotes independence, leaves them feeling empowered, allows them to think for themselves and gives them a purpose. Plus if they know that there will be some things in their control, there will be less melt downs.
Some of the things I like to let Rosebud choose are the order of events such as taking a bath or brushing her teeth first, putting on pants or shirt first eating breakfast or getting dressed first etc. This way she has some control of things she doesn’t necessarily want to do and they are things we have to do anyway. Even though, she doesn’t have a choice in whether to do these things, there is a choice in how she does them.
Depending on the age of your child, you may want to provide less choices. For example if you are picking a book, offer the child two or three choices instead of the whole collection. Younger children can get overwhelmed with too many choices.
Finally, be sure it’s a choice you are okay with. Don’t give them options you wouldn’t want them to choose.
Swipe right to see a list of example choices. Of course, a million of these possibilities will come up throughout your day, so let your children have fun with this.

This Monday, I’m feeling relieved and glad that there have been some changes at my day job as there were people I needed to separate from. I’m also feeling sadness and disappointment as I will no longer be working with the infants and toddlers the majority of the time. Working with the youngest kids has always been my preference. I used to get a lot of enjoyment, but the current environment there has made that impossible.
I hope I will like the changes and that things will go smoothly. Of course, I can’t see the whole staircase, but I’ve taken the first step.
How are you feeling on this Monday morning?
Today’s activity was very basic. Just a bin full Today’s activity was very basic. Just a bin full of water beads, cups and spoons. It’s a great fine motor plus sensory activity.
This bin is perfect for scooping and pouring or you can add things to go with the water beads.
Little animals, beads of different sizes and textures, flowers, tongs and or a variety of containers.
These can be a choking hazard, so I would not recommend this activity for children who still put things in their mouth.
Rosebud’s birthday missed the cut off for kinder Rosebud’s birthday missed the cut off for kindergarten this year. I think she is definitely ready for that next step in some ways, so I am thinking about the skills she will need before she starts school in the fall. Scary thought. 😭
Other than writing her name, number and letter recognition and some basic reading, we are working on the calendar. She has the weather down, but now we are working on seasons, days of the week, months of the year and the date.
She grasps the concept of today, tomorrow and yesterday, but now we are working on the names of the days. She’s not sure yet about the months, but she knows certain things happen in certain months. Christmas is in December for example.
What I love about this calendar from @melissaanddougtoys
1. It’s magnetic so the pieces stick and won’t get lost.
2. The numbers and letters are large and easy to read.
3. It includes holidays and special occasions including appointments.
4. It has a section for feelings which is another great lesson to add to this activity.
5. You can use it for multiple years.
What skills are you working on with your children?

How are you doing with your goals so far this year?
Today, I’m celebrating reading! Here’s what I’ve been reading over the past couple of months. I’m usually a non fiction reader, but lately, I’ve been diving into nonfiction. Reality is too much at the moment, so I need an escape.
I find time here and there throughout the day to listen to Audible books. While I clean, cook dinner or while I’m waiting for Rosebud to fall asleep. Airpods are a wonderful invention!
How do you find time to read? What are you reading?
If you have kids, you know how fast toys can be ev If you have kids, you know how fast toys can be everywhere. They can be a source of clutter which is why it’s important to keep them organized. One of my goals for this year is to get my home completely organized. I have always tried to keep the toys organized, but I am changing my system a bit since Rosebud has much smaller toys, but more of them. Preschoolers love tiny toys. Here are my tips for organizing toys.
1. Use open baskets or clear bins so that your kids can see what’s inside. This way, they will know where to put everything back.
2. Label bins with a picture of the item if it is in a closed bin and not visible. We’ve done this in every classroom I’ve worked in.
3. Organize toys by theme. I have done this with my shelves. We have a science/sensory shelf with a sensory bin, play-dough and magnet blocks with animals and people. I have a shelf for books and games, puzzles, crafts, Barbie and doll accessories etc. Ideally I’d separate my books and games so that she can see everything on the shelf, but I don’t have the space.
4. Keep a smaller number of toys out and rotate them. I have taken many of the older toys away believe it or not. Toy rotation keeps the kids interested.
5. Get children involved in the clean up process as early as possible. Even young toddlers can put toys back on shelves or back in bins.
How do you organize toys?

If something is big or small and it really matters, say something.
Whether it is at home, at work or in social situations.
We must do this for our children. We must teach them that it’s necessary to speak up when they are mistreated or when others are mistreated.

We might not accomplish everything we want to each day, but sometimes our small actions will set up for success. This may happen without us even noticing. The seeds that we plant today will help our future selves and those around us.

You can use them while you’re waiting in line at a store, waiting for food at a restaurant or on a long road trip. We will get back to those things eventually.
These games are good for building vocabulary, color, number and letter recognition and of course, taking turns.
Try these with your preschooler!
What are your favorite ways to pass time while waiting with your kids?
Today’s affirmation is I am growing outside of m Today’s affirmation is I am growing outside of my comfort zone.
My theme for the week has been trying new things and stepping out of my comfort zone.
Speaking of that, I joined these ladies on Clubhouse. @jennie_myfavoritelife and @anchors.away.photography to talk about everything blogging! Thank you ladies for hosting the chat and if you are a mom blogger, definitely check it out.
I am new to Clubhouse as are a lot of other people, but for those who don’t know I have struggled most of my life with shyness. Talking to new people is not easy for me. Sometimes it’s not knowing what to say, but more often than not, it’s not wanting to put myself out there. It’s the fear of other people thinking I’m not smart enough, not funny enough, not interesting enough, not worthy enough etc. It even crept in last night. Am I good enough for these other bloggers? My blog is not as successful as theirs. Maybe they won’t find me interesting.
Then after I got Rosebud to sleep and I was able to actually speak up, the Clubhouse app wasn’t working for me. It was only letting me listen and not join the conversation. Hopefully next time it will work, but the mostimportant part is I tried. I joined, I listened and I was ready to speak up! I was moving beyond that fear. How can you step out of your comfort zone today?
I’m on Clubhouse as nmccoaching if you’d like to follow me over there.

I’ve decided that on Wednesdays, I will post thi I’ve decided that on Wednesdays, I will post things to celebrate. Today I’m celebrating friendship! This gift is from a friend of mine. We have known each other as teenagers. We met one weekend because we were both apart of a work program. She lives in MA and I live in ME, but we’ve stayed in touch all these years through letters, then E-mails and now texts. We have this tradition of sending each other a gift every year and this year was no exception. She always finds these cute little things. These products from @bathandbodyworks smell amazing! The charger and jewelry are unique and the candy is always good. We always need chocolate in this house!
What are you celebrating today?
Rosebud loves using this little cup and pitcher to Rosebud loves using this little cup and pitcher to pour her own drinks. I fill the pitcher with water or juice and she refills her cup when needed. Things like this are important for teaching and encouraging independence.
This is just one way I encourage Rosebud to practice life skills.
What do you do to encourage independence? I have a post on toys that teach life skills coming soon!
“When I let go of what I am, I become who I migh “When I let go of what I am, I become who I might be.” — Lao Tzu
When we focus less on who we have been or the things that should define us. Mainly the things that we cannot do, that leaves room for us to do what we think we cannot do. We can try new things. We can step out of our comfort zone. You might not be able to do something, but you can try. You never know, maybe you’ll be successful.
This weekend I tried doing a reel. While it’s not perfect, I have to start somewhere. I told myself I couldn’t do one. I had no idea how or what I’d take videos of. I’m sure my next one will be better, but my success came in the fact that I tried.
What new things will you try this week?
I had a conversation with Rosebud the other day an I had a conversation with Rosebud the other day and she told me that when she grows up, she wants to be a chef.
She wants to have a bakery so she can make cakes and cookies. She said we are going to have our own baking business and that we’d be baking together.
I asked what her business would be called and she said it would be called, The Cookie Business.
I love it! A girl after my own heart. Not only does she love baking, but she wants to start her own business.
We still have years to go before The Cookie Business is born, but until then, I’m here to coach you!

I didn’t think I’d have to start 2021 with an affirmation like this, but we are still working through the challenges of 2020 and after the events on January 6th, it’s clear we still have many more challenges to work through. We need strength, healing and we need to all do our part to protect ourselves from the negativity. I’m not saying to ignore the things that are going on. We can’t sweep them under the rug, but we need to protect our own mental health and energy if we want to make a difference.
